Winning Second Place With My Copper Tree!

32nd Annual Vicksburg Art Association
Mississippi Artists Exhibition
October 20, 2012 through October 24, 2012
Old Constitution Firehouse Gallery - 1204 Main Street - Vicksburg, MS  39180

I was so happy and surprised to get second place in 3-D art for my copper tree.  This is the first time to enter in the Vicksburg Art Association and to show my paintings and copper tree.  (front angle)

A side angle.  I did not know that I could enter my copper tree but brought it with me when I took my paintings.  I was told by Randy Jolly that I could enter it!  I sure was lucky!

My wife, Marian and I having our picture taken with my copper tree by Kathy, my step-daughter, who also attended.

I'm so proud of my accomplishment.

There was plenty of food to eat and drinks.

Marian went around taking pictures of the entries before the crowd showed up.

My brother-in-law, Chris Ables, liked the picture above.

My art teacher, Joyce Grey, won 2nd place with her painting of two fish called, Trouble In The Deep.

Joyce also got 3rd place on her picture called, Hug Me!

The Fall Show was conducted by Randy Jolly in the white shirt.  Randy was an art teacher at Warren High School for many years.  This was one of the many hats Randy has worn during his varied career, which has included designing stage sets for the Miss Mississippi pageant.  He has held multiple positions for the VAA, including active involvement in the Firehouse Gallery Restoration and chairing the VAA Fall Show for the past several years.  Randy is currently the Curator and Director of the Gore Galleries at Mississippi College where he teaches set design and stagecraft.

This year's exhibition judge was Benjamin M. Hickey, Curator of Collections and Exhibition Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, Louisiana.  Benjamin hails from Buffalo, New York.

Last year I joined The Vicksburg Art Association but did not place anything for show. This past Saturday I put my copper tree (3-D) and two of my paintings (acrylic) in.  This coming Saturday will be the Fall Show which will be open to Patrons and Benefactors at 6:00 p.m. and to the public at 7:00 p.m.  I'm getting real excited and looking forward to seeing how my entries will do.  If I don't win a ribbon at least I was able to show other artist my work and get to meet and greet them.  It will be held at the an old Firehouse station that has been turned into a gallery.

A large copper tree that I submitted for the art show.

My painting on the right called, Navajo Indian Shade.

Another one I submitted called, Road to Santa Fe!

Selling My Copper Trees & Paintings @ Flea Market

This past Saturday the 29th Annual Old Court House Museum Flea Market was held and Marian and I had a  booth to sell my copper trees and acrylic paintings.  Above is a picture Marian took of me.

My wife's nephew, Bubba Love, took this picture before it started and it was a very good turnout and made a good profit as well.  Click on the links below to see all the pictures that Marian took at the flea market.

While there my good friend and knife maker, Billy Foster, gave me a really nice knife and is pictured below.  His wife said that he had been thinking about giving it to me and decided to let me have it Saturday at the flea market.  Their booth was about 4 down from us.  I really love my new knife!

Some Place Special - 10th Year Celebration

Jessica Delk, right, program coordinator at Some Place Special, presents Juanita Wyatt, center, a certificate of membership at the center on Manor Drive Friday.  (That is my wife, Marian, on the far left clapping for her.  I go to this program and was away from the table at the time this picture was taken)

This past Friday we had our 10th year celebration at Some Place Special where I attend four days a week.

Some Place Special is run by Warren-Yazoo Mental Health Services (WYMH) as a recreational outlet for seniors living in the Vicksburg Area.  My wife is on the Advisory Council Board for WYMH where Don Brown is the director.  He said that the programs helps keep the participants active in the community.

"In a nutshell, it's about socialization," Brown said.  "Most of our folks live at home alone or with family who are not able to be there all day."

Brown said the facility on Manor Drive allows participants to keep up with current events and stay sharp in communication.

Participants are picked up by a bus Monday through Friday mornings and spend each day working on arts and crafts, learning about nutrition and health and taking field trips throughout the region.

Elizabeth Naya was the coordinator for Some Place Special for nine years before Jessica Delk took over.

"Over the years, we have implemented a lot of different programs to address their needs and wants," Naya said.  "They will tell us, 'No we don't like this," or 'We really like this."

Naya went on to describe the atmosphere saying that after several months, the participants grow close and rely on each other.

"It's really a special place," Naya said.  "It's really just a family within a family."

One of the more popular visitors at Some Place Special is Al Gordy's Australian Labradoodle, Smooch, a certified therapeutic dog.

"The thing about therapeutic dogs is they show a high degree of empathy," Gordy said. "Smooch can immediately pick up on someones emotional needs.  His primary job is making people smile."
